Before the Cue

Maybe you’ve felt it…
Your horse knows
before you even ask.
You think about a transition…
and it’s already there.
Some people call this leading from intention.
And yes—horses are that sensitive.

When we are clear and congruent,
they can respond before we even apply the cue.
Not because we did nothing—
but because our body had already said everything.
Before you ask…
your body has already changed.
There’s a reason for this.
Before any movement happens,
your brain has already organized your body.
It prepares your posture, your balance, your coordination—
getting you ready to move.
This is known as anticipatory postural control.
And a part of the brain—the supplementary motor area
helps plan and organize movement before it begins.
So when something doesn’t work…
it’s not always the cue.
It’s what happened just before it.
Less doing.
More noticing.
Because the horse doesn’t wait for the aid.
He responds to what’s already there.
With love and awareness,
Ale
